JP Open Studios Registration Questions
Who is eligible to Register for JP Open Studios? show
Any artist who creates their own original work may apply to be included on our map and in our online artist directory.
How do I register for JP Open Studios? show.
Registration for the Jamaica Plain Open Studios happens online on this web site and will be announced in our email blast (not getting our regular emails? Click here!). It usually takes place in late June.
We will also have an Artist Spring Meeting in the weeks before registration opens up, so that we get as many artists together as possible, answer any questions about registration and give some tips and pointers. The registration will be open for about 3 weeks. After that period, artists may still register with a late fee, but they will not be included in the printed map.
Registration for other events, such as the Annual Juried Show, Mall Show and other events, may happen off line. Be sure to get on the email list to find out the details.
For the step by step details of the registration process, be sure to check out our JPOS Registration A-Z guide.
Group sites: Where can I show, if I don't have a studio? show.
A little about the hosting artists deal: If 3 or more artists share a space together, it will be considered as a Hosted Site and may be eligible for a discount after registration. More details on that here...Hosting Other Artists: Why and How should I share my studio space?
IMPORTANT: Our Group site space is available on a first come first served basis. When they are full, they are full and, to be fair to the other artists and the donated space, we do not add more artists to the space.
You can read all about our group sites here.
Why can't I register at [insert site here] group site?show.
There are many spaces, such as the Footlight Club and Loring Greenough House, that are private spaces and are not open to everyone registering for JPOS. They are not official JPOS group sites and set their own policy of who can participate at that site.
To show at one of those sites, please contact the location or hosting artist and find out their criteria.
Hide. How do I register for a private or hosted site?show.
First, get permission from the hosting artist or site. Find out their criteria and rules, too.
Then, register as an individual artist or studio for the event by clicking on the big link on our home page.
Put in your mailing address in the personal information section. Put the location address in the studio information section (you may need to log in after you complete the payment process to put this in).
The contact the hosting artist to let them know you have completed the registration and ask them if they need any help setting up. ;-)
Hide. What are the fees to participate as an artist in JPOS?show.
To register as an individual artist, in your own studio, home, front porch, hosted space (not a group site) is $95 and includes a 1 year, complimentary membership in the Jamaica Plain Arts Council. To register in a group site location (Loring Greenough House, Eliot School, Cheverus, The Brewery, Central Congregational Church, First Church Unitarian Univeralist) is $150 and includes a 1 year, complimentary membership in the Jamaica Plain Arts Council.
Registration fees include a listing in our printed map (if you register before the deadline) which goes out to over 100,000 households in the greater Boston area, inclusion in the Artist Salon Promo Binder, a listing in our online directory, and the ability to participate in our various press release campaigns and other marketing programs.
You may also upgrade your artist listing to include up to 10 images and an artist statement or bio (longer than the 250 characters allowed on the regular artist directory) for only $67.
Registration AFTER JUNE 14, the closing date of the map, is $135 for individual artists for the weekend and $190 for participation in the official Group Sites.

Can I register off line?show.
Sorry, no. The JP Open Studios is run almost completely by volunteers. Using our online system for registration frees us up to tackle other tasks in putting on this mamoth event. Hide.
Can I share my space/fees with a friend? And can we both be listed in the map/online directory?show.
What are the Official JPOpenStudios Refund Policies?show.
If you have to back out, for whatever reason, we will give you a full refund. But, ONLY if you let us know within 30 days of the close of the regular registration.
The close of regular registration is a published date on our calendar. It also marks the date when we begin to put the official map together and everyone is written in... well, it's not stone, but we still can't make changes easily.
Unfortunately, 30 days after close of regular registration, refunds are closed as well.

Hosting Other Artists: Why should I share my studio space/ Business Window/ Front Porch?show.
Individual artists, local residents and businesses can become private or hosted artist sites during the Jamaica Plain Open Studios. In doing so, they can help keep alive the sense of community and comradery that takes place during JPOS.
Individual Artists who choose to share their space with 2 or more other artists become "Hosting Artists" and are eligible for rebates of up to 50% of their registration fees. If you are hosting 2 or more artists during the event, let us know and we will hook you up!
Host 2 other registered artists and we will refund 25% of the hosting artist's registration fee. Host 3 to 6 additional registered artists and we will refund 50% of the hosting artist's registration fee! Got more than 6 other registered artists in there with you? Who-o-o boy! Let us know and we will take care of you!
Local residents can host artists on their front porch, front lawn, or even in their home, if they are so willing. Their location will be listed on our map and in our directory for the weekend. It is a wonderful way to meet your neighbors, show off your beautiful home or just get a chance to hang out with an artist for a day or two.
Businesses can also benefit from hosting an artist by putting the work in their window, on their walls or in a corner of their space. People will come to see the artist and stay to buy something in the store!
To share your space, you can invite artists you know, put up a note on the jpopenstudios facebook page, or contact our coordinator.Small print: As the hosting artist, you are responsible for the space and managing the artists in that space, including placement etc. The artists themselves also need to be registered as Individual Artists on our site for this offer to be honored. Let us know before the event so that we can see the number of artists at the location and get you your rebate. The rebate will come either by paypal or by check within 45 days of the event or as soon as we can get it all sorted.
Hide.Who is Hosting other Artists?show.
When we are told about someone hosting artists or looking to host artists, we try to put it up in our blog, in our email list and on our facebook group page. You can also post to the facebook page and let people know you are looking for a space for the weekend. Hide.
How do I become a Hosting Artist?show.
If you are interested in hosting one of our artists, post what you are looking for, the space you are offering and your contact information up on our FaceBook page or contact your favorite artist directly!
Some ideas for making this a fun and successful project:
- Host a Preview Opening the Friday night before Open Studios.
- Send out invitations to everyone one you know announcing the Preview and Open Studios.
- Plan a little bbq and whip up hot dogs for people who come to visit.
- Make it a party weekend and just have a great time enjoying the Art!
What is the difference between a Hosted Site and a JPOS Group Siteshow.
The Hosting Program was created to inspire artists to share their private studio space with other artists. Opening their doors to "Host" other artists builds up a critical mass of art for the art loving public to go visit their spaces. It also means that the group can market to more people as they have different lists to send cards and emails to.
For Individual Artists who are "off the beaten path", this has been proven to help build more interest and get people to step off the path a bit and check out their space/work.
It is a push back to the "original" concept of open studios. Artists showing in their studios and homes.
Hosted Sites are private and controlled/curated by the hosting artist, who receives a partial refund of their registration fees in return for hosting 2 or more additional artists. The JP Arts Council does not have any say in the criterea, conditions or other issues at the hosted sites, as long as the basic rules of the event are followed ie: one artist/one registration, hours of participation etc.
The Official JPOS Group Sites were originally created when we left the JP Arts Center, what is now JP Licks, many years ago. Between artists not wanting to or not able to show in their spaces and artists being displaced outside of JP, the group sites were created to bring those artists back to the public eye and let them participate in the community they helped create.
They have since evolved into anchor points in various neighborhoods in response to public and artist pressures. They are a great way to get people to a neighborhood, with the intention that they will filter out to the individual spaces or will find them as they walk between group sites.
They are also locations that are donated to us for the weekend and are run by volunteers. Which has caused us to limit the number of displaying artists in each location due to the pressures and wear and tear it puts on both the location and the volunteer coordinators. Group Sites are often in high demand and fill up quickly. The site coordinators are volunteers appointed by the JP Arts Council and follow guidelines and rules negotiated between the location and the JPAC.

When is the Printed Map Deadline?show.
What do I do if I missed the deadline?show.
As Douglas Adams said, "Don't Panic!"
You can upgrade your listing on our site to include a 10 image gallery to catch the public eye.
You can send out your own postcards to alert your friends to come see you. You can make signs up and put them out (be sure you check to make sure that you are putting the sign up legally. We are not responsible for any tickets or pissed off neighbors!) Oh, yeah! Be sure to tell all your neighbors that you are showing.
It also can help if you tell them that you will have snacks and that you are hosting an opening at your house.
Heck, get a couple more artists to register and come show at your place. They will send info to their friends and, next thing you know, it is a party!
In other words, it is good to be on the map but it is not life threatening if you missed the deadline. Just make sure that you get the word out!

What are the Policies for hanging work at one of our shows?show.
Juried Show/Small Works general policies are also listed below.
Individual site: We ask that you are "open" during the official JPOS hours of 11am to 6 pm. We understand and respect that, during certain holiday weekends, you may wish to close early or not open at all. This is your choice, but we do not make note of this in the printed map, nor make acceptions for registration fees.
Group Sites: All of our group site spaces are graciously volunteered to us, and often times have different requirements, based on their own policies. Be sure to check with the group site coordinators about the availability of loading in before the show, load out after the show and display policies during the show.
Please respect our group sites and coordinators so that they will continue to be a valuable resource to our community!
Juried Show/Small Works and other shows: We have had to tighten up some policies about pick up and drop off of art work at these event. Each of these events will have their own policies, which will be included in the call for entries. Please click here for general policies about pickup and drop off of work.

The JP Open Studios Website
Why doesn't my listing show up in the directory?show.
We took out that information during registration so it would be an easier process... but the art buyin' public still needs that information!

Why doesn't my directory listing have a map address?show.
If you are in an individual site, it means that you have not edited that part of your online listing. Login with the user name and password you registered with and look for the JPOS Artist Menu.
Click on Studio Info and edit the "Where are you showing during Open Studios?" section.
Click "Save" and you are all set!

- login by going to Gallery => login on our web site
- put in the user name and password you registered with.
- Hit enter and you should see a new menu on the right side called The JPOS Artist Menu.
(If you don't see it, your login information may have been entered incorrectly. Try to enter it again. Check to see if Cap Locks are on by accident. If you have forgotten your user name or password, see the faq about Password recovery.) - The JPOS Artist menu navigates to the different areas of your directory listing that you can edit. I lost my password/user name! Now what?show.
If you have already registered for the new year and you have misplaced your username and password, don't worry. It happens to the best of us. That piece of paper with the info needed to add that new photo of your art work has gone missing. What to do? First, fear not! It is easy.
- Go to Gallery =>Login
- Where it says "Lost Password - type in your email address", type in the email address you registered with and click "Send Password". You should see a window that says "Confirmation email sent"
- Check your email for an email titled "New Password request at JP Open Studios" with a link in it. Clicking on that link will send you a new password so you can log in.
- So, check your email for a second email, also titled "New Password request at JP Open Studios". This one has your user name and new password in it.
- Now, you can go back to the login page and use the user name and new password to login and edit your listing.
