Check your listing in our public directory by going to jpopenstudios.com and clicking on Gallery. You can search for your name there too.
If you are not visible, and you have registered, it means that your description and/or your sample image not been uploaded.
You asked us, the volunteer board of JPOS, how to get more for your art during Open Studios. More people, more attention, more sales and just plain more!
Yup, I am serious! Get up to And, it is easy and can even help you sell more of your work!

Most — but not all — of our group sites are at capacity. But that does mean that we still have a couple of spaces available. Don’t forget, you can also contact people you know in the area and see if they are up for hosting you for the weekend. Check in with your fellow artists or even non-artists who might be willing to loan you their front porch!

The JPOS and JPAC need to thank Charlie Rosenberg for his camera work this weekend. He was out both days, shooting up a storm for us to use on our web site and in our marketing efforts.

Congratulations to Rachel Paxton for winning the survey drawing.
Josh Rosen and Stan Strickland have been performing as a duo since Fall 2007, and have been warmly received in standing-room-only concerts. They have a deep rapport, with Stan’s sparkling instrumental colors playing off Josh’s expressive piano. They perform Rosen’s compositions and unique arrangements of favorite standards and cover tunes. Josh and Stan also love to engage in some “freeplay” as they improvise in tandem with ease.

I am Sophie Lacombe, Program Manager of the Arts & Business Council of Greater Boston. I am writing to let you know that we are now accepting applications for the 2008-2009 Artist’s Professional Toolbox Program, an eight-month intensive course designed to empower emerging and practicing visual artists to succeed in the business aspects of being a professional artist. Eighty artists participated to the Toolbox since its inception in 2005. Judging by their feedback, the program was extremely successful in helping them take charge of their careers, both in defining their goals and then learning the skills they need to implement them.

Every once in a while, I get an ad from these guys and I decided to finally check out what they had to offer. Their web site is awash in information about marketing for artists. Here is what their web site mission statement had to say:

Please note a change in the schedule for the pick up of your artwork returning from the exhibition at Logan Airport. The location remains the same - the Maliotis Cultural Center at Hellenic College, near Jamaica Pond.
The countdown is on – 22 days until the JP Open Studios. Do you know which works you will be showing yet? How are you making this decision? One way to go about choosing which of your artworks to display during the Open Studios weekend is to take into account the various types of people who will be attending the event.

Up until about 10 years ago I had regular correspondence with friends, family, and business associates through the mail. Remember that? Selecting the perfect paper or card for the occasion, choosing between a pen or pencil to write with, and even picking a stamp with a picture that suited the occasion. All of these details factored in to the ritual and process of communicating in a personal and thoughtful way. And, my handwriting was great.

Announcing Two Exciting Fall Seminars
Picture this: you’re preparing a submission package about your work for a juried show and the jurors request images of your work, a resume, and an artist statement. You already have a great CD of images, your resume of shows, awards, and honors is up to date, and you’ve just polished off your artist statement – but what does everything look like? We all know that it’s important to dress well when going to a job interview, but if you are sending a representation of yourself on paper instead of presenting in person, your written materials should look good too.

If you’re an artist, you’ve been asked that question about a million times. Why is it so important for viewers of your art to know how long it took you to make something? Sometimes it’s because they are genuinely curious, sometimes it’s because they are trying to gauge how you came up with the price of a piece, and sometimes it’s because they are trying to start a conversation with you. That’s right. They don’t just want to look at your work, people actually want to talk with you! So what do you say back to them?

The 31st Annual Coolidge Corners Arts Festival (CCAF) will be held Saturday June 6th, 2009 from 10 - 6, at 345 Harvard Street on the grounds of The Edward Devotion School.
There are a couple of proven and recommended methods for spreading the word about having a show of your artwork: mailing a postcard, and sending an announcement via email. But those methods are only useful if you have a list of people to hear your announcement. Of course you are planning to use one or both of those methods for announcing when the Jamaica Plain Open Studios is being held and where you will be showing during the weekend, right? There are roughly two months left before the JPOS – a perfect amount of time to build up your mailing list for announcing your event participation.
That’s right! You have two opportunities to proof your entry in our 2008 JPOS Map Booklet before we go to press. But, remember, the deadline for any changes is Saturday, July 26th, at midnight!
