Robin Radin’s Photography Breaks Bread..
March 18, 2010 — mckeephoto2 (Views: 241)

Jamaica Plain photographer and JPOS board member, Robin Radin, in collaboration with Jamaica Plain author, Lynne Anderson, will be having a book published by the University of California Press entitled Breaking Bread: Recipes and Stories From Immigrant Kitchens. The book will be in stores May 2010 and will include 33 of Radin’s photographs. It is already available for pre-order on Amazon.com. Breaking Bread

51V9gXoHT7L._SL500_AA240_.jpg

“With stories of hand-rolled pasta and homemade chutney, visits to local markets and backyard gardens, and foraging trips for mushrooms and grape leaves, this book recounts in loving detail the memories, recipes, and culinary traditions of people who have come to the United States from around the world. Chef and teacher Lynne Anderson has gone into immigrant kitchens and discovered the power of food to recall a lost world for those who have left nearly everything behind. Here she presents a cornucopia of stories describing meals shared with family and friends, traditions passed through generations, and unusual ingredients and cooking techniques. The enticing, easy-to-prepare recipes feature specialties like Greek dolmades, Filipino adobo, Brazilian peixada, and Sudanese mulukhiyah. They include a spicy lamb stew from Ethiopia, a complete dinner from Pakistan, mushroom casserole from Russia, and much more. Together with Robin Radin’s beautiful photographs, these stories and recipes will inspire cooks of all levels to explore new traditions while perhaps rediscovering their own culinary roots.”

March 1, 2010 — mckeephoto2 (Views: 197)

showPortfolio.jpgPhotography as a Creative Process At Brookline Adult Education
Photography is a visual art form on a par with painting, drawing, and sculpture. In this course, we will learn how to use the medium of photography for personal, creative expression. Rather than concentrating on the technical aspects, we will use the camera as a tool for artistic creativity. Each student will be guided in choosing a subject to pursue as a project for the semester. We will study a variety of visual techniques in order to create a wide range of emotional and psychological moods. Our goal is to cultivate a unique, individual signature that will distinguish each student’s work. Please bring photographs to the first class. Students are responsible for bringing in prints each week.

Congratulations, JPOS Artists!
October 4, 2007 — Matthew McKee (Views: 1091)

Congratulations, JPOS Artists!

JP’s star shined very brightly this past weekend as thousands of visitors came out to enjoy the weather and some of the finest art in the City.

I spent time on Saturday at the brewery complex enjoying live music by the band A.K.A.C.O.D, and visiting the individual artists studios, and more than 30 artists exhibiting both inside and out. The day was topped off by a visit to Stonybrook Fine Arts by Mayor Menino himself for a ribbon cutting ceremony!

100x100 logoOn Sunday, I toured the many individual artists’ studios in the Hyde Square neighborhood and was inspired to see where the creative process occurs. I was also able to tour some of the group sites along Eliot and the businesses along Centre Street, ending at the exhibition at Red Sun Press and our newest site at the Central Congregational Church. Everywhere, people were walking with Open Studios maps in hand, some with art in hand, and many in line for a bite to eat at the restaurants.

100x100 logo

It was a pleasure and an honor to help the many volunteers and our amazing board of directors coordinate the event and we couldn’t have done any of it without you - the artists and business owners in JP. And so to you I say congratulations and offer my sincerest thanks for being an integral part of the cultural community in JP, a very special place indeed.
